Mini Highland Cow FAQ
Everything first-time and returning buyers ask us about miniature Highland cattle — size, land, care, registration, and reserving.
A mini Highland cow is a smaller-framed Scottish Highland, usually bred to mature around 36–42 inches at the shoulder. They keep the shaggy double coat, long horns, and calm temperament of standard Highlands in a size better suited to small farms and homesteads.
Standard minis commonly mature around 36–42 inches at the shoulder; micro minis are smaller, and midsize animals are taller. Mature size is measured at roughly three years old. Any honest breeder gives an estimate, not a guarantee, since genetics vary.
As a rough guide, many owners plan for about half an acre to one acre per mini cow, depending on pasture quality and how much supplemental feed you provide. They're low-impact grazers but still need room to move, graze, and rest comfortably.
They're among the most people-friendly cattle, especially halter-trained steers — but they are livestock, not backyard pets. With proper space, shelter, fencing, and routine care, they make gentle, rewarding companions that can live 15–20 years.
They're hardy and low-maintenance thanks to their double coat, which handles cold well. They need quality hay and pasture, fresh water, minerals, shelter, secure fencing, and routine hoof and health care like any cattle.
Registration documents lineage and matters most for breeders and show homes. Many pet and companion buyers happily choose quality unregistered animals at a lower price. We're transparent about each animal's status so you can decide.
