What Is a Mini Highland Cow?
A mini Highland cow is a smaller-framed version of the Scottish Highland — one of the world's oldest and most recognizable cattle breeds. It keeps everything people love about Highlands: the long, shaggy double coat, the sweeping horns, the signature fringe over the eyes, and the famously calm temperament — in a more manageable size suited to small farms, homesteads, and families.
Where Highlands come from
Highland cattle originate in the rugged Scottish Highlands and islands, where centuries in a harsh climate produced a hardy, thrifty animal with a thick weatherproof coat. That heritage is why Highlands handle cold beautifully and forage well on modest pasture. Miniature Highlands are simply smaller animals bred down in size while keeping those traits.
Mini vs. standard Highland
The difference is mainly scale. A standard Highland can stand 46 inches or more at the shoulder and weigh half a ton or more; a mini typically matures around 36–42 inches and weighs far less. Temperament, coat, and care needs are broadly the same — you're getting a Highland, just smaller.
Colors and looks
