Why Are Mini Highland Cows So Fluffy?
That irresistible, huggable fluff isn't an accident — it's centuries of Scottish weather at work. Mini Highlands are fuzzy for the same reason standard Highlands are: they carry a double coat built to survive cold, wind, and rain. Here's the story behind the fluff (and yes, our whole name is a nod to it).
The famous double coat
Highlands have two layers: a long, coarse, oily outer coat that sheds rain and wind, and a soft, downy undercoat that traps warmth. Together they act like a built-in raincoat and thermal layer, which is why Highlands handle cold climates so comfortably and need little more than shelter from the worst weather.
Why the fringe over the eyes?
That signature fringe — sometimes called a "dossan" — helps protect their eyes from wind, rain, insects, and bright sun. It's charming, but it's functional first. A little grooming keeps it tidy and lets those sweet eyes peek through.
Do they shed?
Yes. In warmer months Highlands shed out much of that heavy coat to stay cool, then grow it back as the weather turns. In hot climates, owners lean on shade and water rather than a heavy coat to keep animals comfortable — the coat is an asset in the cold and something to manage in the heat.
Are minis fluffier than standards?
